The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Learning System website is designed for the information and registration of students interested in pursuing the courses offered on-campus and online.

The courses, SHRM Fundamentals/Essentials of HR Management and SHRM Learning System, are developed with the goal of expanding the knowledge-base of Human Resources practitioners, as well as prepare them for the Professional in Human Resource (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resource (SPHR) exams offered through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI.) Additionally, these courses may be taken for professional development or to meet the HRCI recertification requirements.

As it's title suggests, the Fundamentals/Essentials course is designed primarily to teach Human Resources practitioners the fundamentals of Human Resources. It is a 6-week introductory overview of the human resource functions. This course is an excellent option for individuals who are entry level in the Human Resources field, those who are considering Human Resources as a career, managers who have Human Resources responsibilities, or HR practitioners in need of further education to expand their job duties and/or knowledge base.

The SHRM Learning System course is a 12-week course designed for concentrated study and preparation for the PHR/SPHR exam. Exam applicants must have a minimum of 2 years experience in the field at an exempt level in order to qualify to take the exam. Exams are conducted by HRCI, and take place twice a year on-line. HR professionals who take this course prior to taking the exam have a considerably higher rate of passing the exam than those who opt to study for the exam independently.

The SHRM Learning System course is also offered online through the university. The online course is available to those HR practitioners who are unable to attend the once-weekly nighttime course meetings and those who live outside the vicinity of Anchorage. As with both the Fundamentals, and the on-campus SHRM Learning System courses, the instructor of the online course is a certified HR professional, often a member of the Anchorage community. This is an excellent option for those with limited time. The materials for the course are the same as those used in the on-campus version.

These courses are designed by the Human Resources Certification Institute, or HRCI. The student and instructor's materials are both supplied by the Holmes Corporation, in cooperation with HRCI. APU provides the space, and organizes local HR professionals to teach the modules.
